Here’s a picture I took for Julien Vallée. It was commissioned by ELLE Decoration UK and will be published in the September 2008 issue to illustrate an article on London’s best libraries. The books were of course hand made by Julien in collaboration with Guillaume Vallée. The pieces were put on a black plexiglas and the little pieces of floating paper were put in place manually using fish line. There was quite of bit of retouching required for the final look to clean up the place, allow it to breathe and enhance reflections. I’m really happy with the results as I am not used to shoot tabletop so often. In this case several lights were necessary to reveal the dimensions of the books, creating little edges of light on the book covers and on the pages. I needed to be careful, avoiding light to spill on the plexiglas to create unwanted reflections. In the end, there is a cool retro feel to the shot brought by the use of plexiglas, I like it!
